Protecting Our Freedom To Vote & Expanding Our Access To The Ballot
The majority party in Ohio has consistently worked to limit access to the polls and undermine the power of Ohioans' votes in the democratic process.
Ohio is the second most voter-purged state after Georgia and has some of the worst gerrymandered maps in the country. OOC is leading grassroots efforts to build public pressure to expand access to the ballot and ensure that the final maps that come out of the redistricting process are fair and representative of Ohio.
Our Work
No matter where we come from or what candidate we support, we all want safe, secure, and fair elections in Ohio. We also all want an equally accessible path to the ballot box to exercise our most fundamental American right.
In 2024, OOC is helping lead the coalition behind the Ohio Voters Bill of Rights effort in Ohio. There is a growing coalition of organizations and individuals who are united in their commitment to build a democracy and voting system in our state. Our coalition includes organizations at the forefront of fighting for the full power of our votes in Ohio for more than a decade, including the Ohio Chapter of the NAACP, the Ohio Unity Coalition, and the A. Philip Randolph Institute.
The powerful new amendment – newly titled the Ohio Voters Bill of Rights — finally enshrines as a fundamental right the right to vote for all Ohioans safely and securely. The amendment removes unnecessary voting restrictions to ensure fairness and equal access to the ballot.
Our Victories
In 2023, OOC was a key part of building the coalition of more than 250 organizations to stop attacks on direct democracy in Ohio. Our leaders helped defeat the controversial Issue 1 initiative during an August special election.
From 2021-2023, OOC helped lead the Equal Districts coalition, which fought for fair district maps in Ohio. We sued the Ohio Redistricting Commission for their failure to pass fair maps, resulting in the Ohio Supreme Court ruling in our favor multiple times. We also helped change the conversation about what a fair map constitutes in Ohio.
